Building on the legacy of National Negro Doll Company, other Black entrepreneurs emerged, carrying the torch forward. Visionaries like Shindana Toys and Uncle Toys, established in the 1960s and 1970s, respectively, continued to break barriers by creating dolls that authentically represented Black children. Shindana Toys, in particular, gained acclaim for its diverse range of dolls and commitment to promoting positive self-image among Black youth.
Fast forward to the present, and Orijin Bees stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and representation within the Black community. Our dolls are not just toys; they are a celebration of culture, heritage, and the rich diversity within the Black experience. By acknowledging the contributions of those who came before us, we strive to create a legacy that fosters self-love and empowerment among the next generation.
Representation matters, and Orijin Bees is committed to providing children with dolls that reflect the beauty and uniqueness of their identity. Our dolls are more than playthings; they are tools for fostering self-esteem and a sense of belonging. Through our creations, we aim to inspire young minds to dream big, knowing that they are standing on the shoulders of a rich legacy.
As we celebrate Black History Month, let us not only reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the past but also look to the future with hope and determination. Orijin Bees is proud to contribute to the narrative of representation in the toy industry, and we carry the torch forward with gratitude to those who paved the way. Together, we honor our ancestors and embrace the responsibility of shaping a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow.

Coretta Scott King was a fierce advocate for civil rights, equality, and justice. After the tragic assassination of her husband, she did not retreat but instead stepped into the forefront of the movement, championing the causes that both she and Martin Luther King Jr. held dear. Coretta played a pivotal role in the struggle against racial injustice, advocating for the rights of African Americans and other marginalized communities.
Her activism extended beyond American borders as she became an international ambassador for peace, speaking out against apartheid in South Africa and advocating for global human rights. In 1969, she established the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia, as a living memorial to her late husband. The center became a hub for research, education, and community engagement, ensuring that the principles of nonviolence and equality continued to thrive.
Despite the challenges and tragedies that marked her life, Coretta Scott King remained a pillar of strength for her four children – Yolanda, Martin III, Dexter, and Bernice. As a mother, she not only nurtured and protected her children but also instilled in them the values of justice, compassion, and equality. Her commitment to her family did not deter her from her activism; instead, it fueled her determination to create a better world for her children and future generations.
In her role as a mother, Coretta faced the dual challenge of raising her children amidst the scrutiny and dangers of the civil rights movement. Her ability to balance motherhood with activism showcased her resilience and determination to break the chains of injustice, not just for her own family but for all families impacted by discrimination and inequality.
Coretta Scott King understood the importance of preserving her husband's legacy for posterity. In addition to establishing the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, she tirelessly worked to ensure that Martin's teachings and philosophy of nonviolence continued to inspire and guide generations to come. Her efforts culminated in the creation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed annually as a federal holiday in the United States.
Beyond institutionalizing her husband's memory, Coretta Scott King became an eloquent spokesperson for the principles he stood for. She wrote extensively about their shared vision for a just and equitable society, ensuring that Martin's words and ideals remained relevant and influential. Through her unwavering commitment, Coretta cemented her place as a key figure in the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice.
Coretta Scott King's legacy is one of courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the cause of justice. Her activism, coupled with her role as a mother and guardian of her husband's memory, exemplifies the transformative power of love and resilience. As we reflect on the enduring impact of Coretta Scott King, let us be inspired by her commitment to making the world a better place, one rooted in equality, dignity, and the relentless pursuit of justice.
]]>Sundays are my favorite day of the week. It's the day I try to recenter myself and my family. For us, our center is our faith. It's my faith that has seen my through the most challenging times of my life. It's my constant. Through the joy and through the rain.
During service today, I prayed for all of our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. My prayer centered around asking God to bless, guide, and protect each and every one of them. As a mother, there is nothing more important to me than the well-being and happiness of my children. I find solace in knowing that I can turn to my faith and seek divine intervention on their behalf.
In this ever-changing and sometimes turbulent world, it can be overwhelming to raise children. We want nothing but the best for them, and we strive to provide a nurturing environment filled with love, support, and positive values. However, we also understand that there are limits to our control and influence. That's where prayer comes in.
My prayer today was a heartfelt plea to God to watch over our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews to bless them with good health, strength, and wisdom. I asked for guidance in their decision-making, that they may choose paths that align with their true purpose and bring them joy and fulfillment. I prayed that they would be surrounded by positive influences and kind-hearted individuals who would support and uplift them.
But prayer isn't just about asking for blessings; it's also about gratitude. I took a moment to express my profound gratitude for the beautiful souls that our children are. Each of them is unique, with their own talents, dreams, and aspirations. I thanked God for the love they bring into our lives.
I also prayed for the world they are growing up in. I asked for peace, compassion, and understanding to prevail. I prayed that they would be protected from harm and shielded from negativity. May their hearts remain pure and full of love, and may they always find the strength to stand up for what is right.
As parents, we do everything we can to protect our children physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We teach them about kindness, empathy, and the importance of making a positive impact on the world. But there will always be moments when we feel powerless, uncertain about the future. It is during those times that we turn to prayer especially, seeking comfort and reassurance.
Prayer reminds us that we are not alone in this journey. We have a divine source of strength and wisdom to rely on. It gives us hope, reminding us that even in the face of adversity, there is a higher power looking out for our children. We trust that our God has a plan for each of them, and we surrender our worries and fears into His hands.
So, as I conclude this Sunday reflection, I invite you to join me in prayer. Let us ask God to bless, guide, and protect our children. Let us express our gratitude for their presence in our lives and entrust their futures into His loving care. May our prayers be heard and answered, and may our children continue to thrive and flourish in the light of God's love.
Dear God,
We come before you today with humble hearts, filled with love and gratitude for our precious children. We thank you for the gift of their lives and for the joy they bring to our families. We ask for your blessings upon them, dear Lord.
Please watch over them, guide them, and protect them in all their endeavors. Grant them good health and fill their hearts with strength and courage. Help them make wise choices and lead them on the path that aligns with their true purpose.
Surround them with positive influences, dear Lord, and shield them from harm. May they be a light in the world, spreading kindness, compassion, and understanding wherever they go. Grant them the wisdom to discern right from wrong and the courage to stand up for justice and truth.
In this ever-changing world, we entrust their futures into your loving hands. We know that you have a plan for each of them, and we surrender our worries and fears to you.
Wishing you all a week of peace, abundance and blessings!!
Love,
Melissa Orijin
]]>One of his most notable achievements was the founding of the National Negro Doll Company in 1905. The company was created to provide African American children with dolls that reflected their own image, which was not widely represented in the market at the time.
Boyd and his wife, Nettie, handcrafted each doll with care and attention to detail, ensuring that each one was unique and special. The dolls were made of cloth and stuffed with sawdust, and they featured lifelike hair, realistic clothing, and lifelike facial features. The company also produced accessories such as doll furniture, clothes, and even miniature homes.
The National Negro Doll Company was a huge success, and its dolls were beloved by Black children across the country. Boyd's creation of the company was a testament to his commitment to the African American community and his belief in the importance of representation. The dolls provided children with positive role models and allowed them to see themselves reflected in the toys they played with, helping to boost their self-esteem and pride.
Unfortunately, the National Negro Doll Company faced significant challenges, including competition from larger toy manufacturers and the Great Depression. Despite these obstacles, Boyd remained committed to his cause and continued to produce dolls until his death in 1959.
Today, the legacy of Richard Henry Boyd and the National Negro Doll Company lives on, and the dolls remain a symbol of empowerment and representation for African American children. The company's impact cannot be overstated, as it paved the way for increased representation in the toy industry and inspired future generations of entrepreneurs and innovators.
In conclusion, Richard Henry Boyd and the National Negro Doll Company were trailblazers in the African American community, providing children with positive representation and inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs. Their legacy continues to inspire and empower Black children and serves as a reminder of the importance of representation and diversity in all aspects of society.
